There is no such thing as a goldfish having "pleny", nor plenty, of space in a 1-gallon tank. Read the following link for more information on how to care for your fish properly: http://www.superfish.orcon.net.nz/bg.htm#buyingtank

If you can't care for it properly, take it back to the pet store. Lord knows it'll get better care there than with you.

Only if you follow the rule of 1gal. of water per 1 inch of fish, and plenty of partial water changes, and never over feed--- oh what the heck, get the pump...one that works with an under gravel filter system. cheap and easy. course, it might depend on what type of fish you have and how much actual water surface area there is. Betas have a special gland that aids in getting oxygen from the air.Gold fish do not-and they are dirtier also. Betas- yes. good old goldy-no.

it is best to have a pump on any tank. The fish may survive depending on the kind (ie betta) but water circulation is almost a have to for all species of fish.

it is ok to not have an air pump as long as there is some type of filtration to help get the waste out but a 1 gallon tank or bowl is way too small

yes its ok. As long as you only have 1 fish. You might consider some live plants. They will help break down waste and provide oxygen as well.
