Have the rise of computers and television make americans smarter or dumber?

I'd say much lazier actually. Because the more we use computers to do stuff and even some other forms of technology, we are forgetting the fine art of doing things the manual way without this gadet to help us out. And I think its hurting our world more and more.

Well, the internet brings knowledge right to your screen. In some cases, I would say smarter due to the vast amounts of information that can be accesed. BUT, it also brings porn,misinformation,addicting wastes of time (Yahoo Q&A)...
Television is the same, you can watch discovery,food,history channel...or you can lay around all day watching the view or cartoon network. So I guess it is a mix of smart and dumb. Just depends on how you make use of the technology at hand.

the computer have help make people smarter by giving the access to imformation that can be educational
the television broaden the american scope of interest and knowledge of people and counties around the world
both can be educational
both can be entertainment

Smarter. By having the technology to help cope with our ever growing world, I see it as a way to speed up the brain waves in our head and get those wheels turning!

You can learn lots of educational inforamtion from TV. But almost all news sources are bias and the key for goverment to brainwash us. So the television makes people ignorant and it screws our brain.

Considering what they use it for usually, dumber. It can be used for good things though, like expanding cultural horizons or learning about how things work.

Television has made reading unpopular. So that has contributed to a general dumbing down.
Internet has made it easy to cheat your way through school.
