Some CD-Rom drives don't read CD-R disks very well. This is especially true if the CD-R was not properly closed out and finalized when it was burned.

It's also possible that the CD-R is corrupt. Have you tried it in another machine?

I had this very same problem with my Dell combo drive a few months ago. It worked fine for 9 months and then just randomly stopped recognizing CD-R discs.

Dell replaced the drive and the replacement drive recognized CD-R but wouldn't recognize DVD-Rs.

I finally solved the problem by intalling the trial version of Nero 7. I don't know what the program did but everything magically fixed itself as soon as it was installed.

Well what are you trying to do? Burn a CD? Or just read the CD-R?

If trying to burn a CD-R - make sure it is the correct type of CD-R (music, data). Also make sure you have a CD-R drive!

If you are trying to read the CD-R - make sure that your CD drive can read CD-R's in the first place. Some older CD drives don't recognize CD-Rs.

Lastly - if you have a CD-R drive (or a CD drive that can read CD-R's) make sure the CD-R isn't blank.

Are you sure the disc isn't blank? That's the only simple solution I can think of. But basically the other other thing could be a bad disc drive.
