i think this person is trying to say that science (physics) and religion (10 commandments) are opposing forces and that while most people order their world around science, this person prefers to use religion...now why they think the 2 can't coexist is beyond me

Look at them as "Laws." The 10 commandments tell you what NOT to do, because you are perfectly capable of doing them.
You don't need a law to tell you not to do something you can't do anyway. For example, there is no law or commandment telling you "thou shalt not jump up and fly" This comes under the heading of the laws of physics that say "you must obey gravity." Because you have to obey the laws of physics and you don't have to obey the laws of man (or God), they are considered complementary or counterparts.

"counterpart" usually indicates something that is an equivelant to something else in an opposition. Therefore, belief in science has the "laws of physics" as a foundation and a belief in God has "the 10 Commandments" as it's foundation.

That the ten commandments are as important and immutable as the laws of physics.

They're not, by the way.

It means that the person who posted it chooses to value their belief system over science.

I would ask the driver how he feels about gravity, it being one of the basic laws of physics.
