Looking at the new High Def photos of Mars it looks like there is ice at the pole.

Yes, it was the Mars Polar Lander. It crashed on landing and was lost.

We knew ice was at the poles of Mars long ago, way before Hi-Def.

However, the ice is NOT water, although it is possible trace amounts exist... but it is actually frozen carbon dioxide, or dry ice as you may know it.

We know this from past probes that were sent to Mars.
