Why does America hate Hugo Chavez?

Chavez was democratically elected in elections certified by independent outside observers (including former US president Jimmy Carter) as free and fair. The US calls him a dictator and funds an armed coup against him. One of the first acts of the leader of the coup is to announce that political parties and elections are indefinately suspended. After 2 days, the people of Venezuela rise up in a counter-coup and restore Chavez to power. He holds a referendum asking the country whether they want him as president. He wins with an overwhelming majority. Again the vote is declared free and fair by outside observers.

What the US does not like is that as a social democrat, Hugo Chavez prefers to use his country's wealth to take care of the poor rather than putting it into the coffers of US companies (unlike many of his predecessors). He insists that outside corporations (mostly American) pay their fair share of taxes. He pulls out of a free trade agreement which was beneficial to the US but not to Venezuela. In other words, he works in the interest of his country, not in the interests of the US. Such independence in America's back door cannot be tolerated.

Chavez mainly hates the Bush administration, not America as a whole. He hates the Bush administration because he believes they were behind an attempted military coup in Venezuela to overthrow Chavez in 2002. The coup failed, mainly due to Chavez's popularity within Venezuela. Chavez also believes our current govt. supports big oil companies, while Chavez himself is attempting to use oil revenue to support the lower class and the poor in Venezuela.
