O.k. I know a lot of you are going to read this and think how dare me for going back to work. Anyways........I was off for my 6 week maternity leave and I had my baby on a good schedule as far as, she would sleep for 2 or 3 hours, wake up to feed and I would change her diaper and play w/her for an hour, then she would fall asleep for 2 or 3 hours. We did this all day and all night. Now that I have started work this week, she is going to grandma's house in the morning from 8:30a.m. to 5:30p.m. It is difficult for grandma to get her to nap. She takes really short naps for like 15 or 20 minutes a couple times a day and that's it. Well, when I get her home, she falls asleep at like 6p.m and doesn't wake up until 11p.m. then i feed her, change her, play w/her, and she falls back asleep for another 4 or 5 hours. Then I have to drag her off to grandma's all over again. She is eating great, using the bathroom great, and she is not that fussy. Is this normal?

Hello? She's six weeks old ... there is no routine yet.

It's probably because of her new atmosphere at grandma's house. She has to see everything thats going on, and know what's happening. So, then she's really tired from being awake all day and sleeps at night. Our daughter would do that anytime we went anywhere for the day. It's normal, and she may come around once she is used to Grandma's, or it may become her normal schedule. Babies eat, sleep and go potty whenever they feel like it, so no point is worrying! Good Luck and God Bless!

P.S.
How dare ANYONE say anything about a mother going back to work. In these times, women need to work. Not always to pay the bills (when hubby takes care of that) but still, college funds? investing for furture? or just plain having a good time in life? What good is being home with your baby when you can't afford to take her places and show her things? Plus, I think in 18 years when she has a real start to life with a college/trust fund she will understand if she didn't before. You tell those other people to shut up and you'll raise your baby how you please!

We were lucky that we could take care of our boy for 4 months. During the first 2 months, he slept between 3 to 4 hours at a time, and would need diaper change and feedings when he wakes up (day or night). However, when he started to sleep a little longer, we grew concerned. We were afraid that he was not eating enough. So we stuck to a clock and fed him every 3 or 4 hours. That meant waking him up if he was still asleep.

So, we asked your question to our pediatrician upon next visit. She indicated that it's normal for babies to start sleeping longer and longer as they adapt to our days and nights. We should only feed him at his schedule (whenever he wakes up) instead of sticking to the clock, AFTER 8 or 9 weeks. We were so relieved.

So, if you worry, ask your pediatrician for a more official answer. Otherwise, stick to the clock for a couple more weeks. :)

Hi - I have a daughter the same age. I asked my pediatrician some of the same questions about her routine. His answer was that at this age, you can't expect a routine, only a general pattern of sleep/wake. That said, it's important to make sure that grandma is not changing the pattern you've established because of her own views on parenting. (I faced this when my mother came to stay for a few weeks.) This may require a frank conversation. Good luck back at work and with the baby!

I think it sounds normal. Maybe Grandmas routine is diffrent and her house is diffrent than what the baby is used to. Try and keep her awake some when u get home, play with her then and drag her bedtime out that way a bit and she should sleep thru the night in no time seeing how she is sleeping for 5 hrs when she gets home to her usual surroundings

Goodness, yes! First of all, your little doll is her own little person and personality. You are already blessed if she is healthy and letting you sleep for 4 or 5 hours at night. It sounds like she is adapting to her new schedule.

P.S. Is grandma really leaving her alone during the day to let her sleep? When my younger son was born, my mother-in-law and older son would sometimes do things to wake him just so they could spend time with him.

If she's happy, healthy, gaining weight and not fussy, you've got it made, dear!! Better she sleeps good for you through the night, since you have to get up and go to work - Grandma may be tired at the end of the day, but at least everyone's getting rest at night!

It's too early to impose rules. Maybe in another month you can attempt but still rather early. Schedules can be made with a little discipline (gently) once they are 4-6 months.

i dont see a problem with this. unless if the baby really is tired and cranky but wont sleep. but if the baby isnt tired, just tell grandma to let her stay awake. it could just be that she isnt at home, maybe not comfortable enough to sleep and time will cure that. if the baby is not really fussy throughout the day i wouldnt be worried

Well it seems you had a schedule with your baby and now that she goes to a different house ...your mom has different routines ... so thats why she doesnt nap properly etc... does she have a fav. toy or blankie... take it to yuor mom's house or a bouncer she loves to be in.. these things comfort kids and they sleep longer. Something with your smell might help since they get use to our smells. I didnt have that problem with my mom, but usually my boy use to not sleep being at granny's lol...she kept him awake and that kinda affected me also but thats how life is..kids are unpredictable.
