i have a cracked head gasket on a 83 cherokee with a 360 engine?

When you say cracked head gasket do you mean exactly that or is the head cracked?
if the gasket you will need a manual and mechanical no how .
if you head overheated you will need to have it skimmed to flat as it may have warped.
you will need to take the head to a machine shop for skimming.
if its the head is cracked then the best bet and cheapest alternative is go to a scrapper to sorce a second hand head.
again make sure you replace the old head gasket with new .

a head gasket does not crack, but a cylinder head or intake manifold does

360 engine is not a hard oen ot work on, however the hard part is getting the intake manifold off and the exhaust manifold unbolted and all the wiring and hoses and lines and such

it depends on holw old it is and if it is carb or fule injected, the later it is then the more complicated it will be, in most all cases, you will need a good variety of metric and SAE tools, and ability to remember where everything was connected and came from, and it will take a couple or three or more hours depending on your mechanical abilities

easy for someone who wrenches all the time like myself, but hard for someone who doesnt know what they are doing- duh

it won't be very hard to do if you have the proper tools to do the job right which will include a tourque wrench. the best thing to do would be to by a service manual for your vehicle at a local parts store before you start anything and it should tell you in there how to do the job. if it looks like it will be over your head take it to a shop.
