Not to panic you, just to prepare you, I'd also suggest that you read up on the latest re: drugs, etc. "Huffing" and "the choking game" etc. Again, not to panic you, but you should know other signs to look for just in case.
Is he being bullied?
Is he still friendly with the same, "good" kids? Is he keeping up with his schoolwork? Sleeping and eating well? No huge changes in activities/interests? Has something changed on the home front which might be effecting his disposition?
If so, perhaps what you're going through is just a phase/transition. Let him know how much you love and support him. Tell him you're worried. Ask if he needs help or is having some problem that he would like to discuss with you. Encourage him to reach out to someone (father, counselor, minister, etc.) if he feels he's unable to talk to you.
Don't let him get away with lying, though. Set firm boundaries and follow up on punishments. Let him know that for actions there are consequences. As kids push the limits they're really counting on us to hold those limits to what's safe. Offer to be his "excuse" if he ever needs to get away from a situation. Come up with a code word he can use on the phone which means "come pick me up right away" that won't let his friends catch on.
Best of luck to you. Sons are great!!!!

I am a mom of an 11 yr girl and she is going thru similar things that
you have described. However my daughter is a horrible liar and gave that up. Yes it is a phase that they are going thru however they still need to be disicplined for their actions. Good Luck
