give him treats, like granola bars, oatmeal bars and the like-micro popcorn, fritos, doritos, snacky stuff- maybe some essentials like toiletries, maybe a couple dvds if he has a player- bootcamp is kind of hard, they don't have many niceties and limited access to such. Some t-shirts of local sports teams he enjoys will be nice, they do have downtime when they can wear civvies. A great card from you all will be appreciated. PHONE CARDS- they are a great gift and well appreciated. Walmart has them, he can use a payphone to make calls home (or if you know he uses a cell service pay as you go, get him some cards that will buy him time). Gift cards from Best Buy or Target- he can order stuff online and have it delivered. Some nice food things from his home will do well too, stuff that he can't get from home while at base(check catalogues for this, there is a myriad of stuff out there!). Be sure to use the US Postal service flat rate boxes for the mailings, there are 2 and they are pretty accomodating, free for the asking- a med. square one and a larger shirt size box- you can stuff them full as you can and it is a flat rate, very reasonable. You can also have delivery confirmation on them and insurance. They are a good source, I have used them very often for my spouse in Iraq, and so far (knock wood) there hasn't been any probs. with delivery yet. I'd think even less here in the states. Also, put his name out with the community-your workplace, churches, schools, whatever- and maybe they will come to the challenge and send him cards and well wishes, and some treats. They all need to know we care about them and whatever we send is much appreciated. Send a bit extra for him to share with his buddies, they all need a bit of "home" while in basic. Just knowing you all care so much will be a nice thing for him. And thank him for his service, that takes a lot of grit to come up to the bar these days.
