Its obviously an appeal to the conservative religious right to say that if you don't believe in God, you must be an immoral person at heart.
The ironic thing is that we all could name dozens of religious figures who have been anything but moral in their actions.

It isn't meaningless. These days, it sometimes seems redundant. There is nothing un American about being secular. There is something un American about trying to force everyone else to be secular.
The fact that being a Godless liberal isn't un American doesn't make the expression meaningless.

Yes I am a Liberal and a devout believer in Christ. And if You were to listen to the teachings of Christ you would find that in todays light Ann Coultier would hate him too.

I don't know why the conservatives use the term "godless liberals". The smug way most of them act, they don't seem to care about truly honoring God. So I don't know why they bring God into it.
