Although you may not realise it, we all manage stress in the course of our day-to-day lives. For example, if after having an argument with someone you then watch TV or go for a walk to put it out of your mind, you are actually practicing a form of stress management. These kinds of activities are also known as coping strategies. We are basically dealing with the external pressure before it ever becomes actual stress.
Stress is a medical condition. Many of us function under some amount of pressure most or all of the time, but if you find that you are suffering from regular or chronic stress, then you must see a doctor. He or she will be able to advise you on appropriate and effective techniques and treatments for alleviating your stress. Anxiety is also a medical condition, and again, if you are feeling anxious every day then we strongly recommend that you speak to a medical professional for advice.

I have taken kava-kava and it seems to relieve my anxiety, but I've noticed that it takes about 4 hours to really get me settled down. So if I have a stressful event in the evening, I need to take it at about 1pm. Some other things I've tried are GABA and 5-HTP (vitamin/supplements), valerian (herb) There are a number of natural calming "vitamins" on the market. Some have worked for me, some haven't so it could be a matter of trial and error for your body. Exercise is one of the best things to do. Walk or do gentle yoga/ tai chi.
My latest anxiety-fighter is a rubber band around my wrist. Whenever I start letting my thoughts go bad, I literally "snap out of it". I have noticed that if I allow myself to think about it, it makes it worse. I'm working to control my anxious thoughts and stop them.
I was taking Saint Johns wort too but I'm not sure if it works for me-- unless my anxiety went from a 10 to a 6 and I was hoping it would bring it down to a 2? It was hard to judge if it was doing a lot of good.

There are herbs that are called Nervine herbs. They help calm the nerves that cause muscles to tense. However your problem isn't in the nerves. The space between your ears is causing all the stress problems. If you think toooo much and worry, your doing it to yourself. Learn to meditate and get rid of the stress.

The BEST thing you can do to relieve stress/anxiety, is not in the pill form.....it's called exercise, yoga, meditation....things you do for yourself. Works for me, and I was on the heavy drugs (Valium, Xanax) for years. Feel so much more "human" now.
