Joan of Arc was her real name.
Her father, Jacques d'Arc named her Joan d'Arc. That's french for Joan of Arc.

Her family name was Arc, and she was Joan of the family Arc.

Also, Robert 2020 is wrong. She was not a peasant. her father owned 50 acres of land and was a village official and tax collector.

Jeanne la Pucelle or
La Pucelle

1)when I put "Joan of Arc" into the Yahoo search engine, the Wikipedia link mentioned Jeanne la Pucelle:

Joan of Arc - Wikipedia
Article follows the life and death of Jeanne la Pucelle, the French heroine and Roman-Catholic saint popularly known as Joan of Arc.
Category: Christian Saints > Joan of Arc (1412-1431)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_of_Arc - 123k - Cached - More from this site

but the Wiki entry didn't say anything about la Pucelle.

2)the Catholic Encyclopedia came thru

3)Perhaps these are nicknames. "Pucelle" means the maid. It seems there are antiquated spellings: Jeanne D'arc or Jehanne Darc. Hope this helps

My understanding for the confusion is that in the past the apostrophe was used infrequently or not at all in French. So her father's last name Darc seen in more modern French would come off as D'arc. Though I hear other explanations as well. None seem to mention her actually coming from a place called Arc however.

Since she was from a peasant family, she may not have had a last name. Or maybe she was called 'Joan of Orleans'.

Jeanne d'arc just means 'Joan of Arc' in French

The answer is Jean D'arc; Jeanne d'Arc; Jehanne Darc; and she is knowingly referred to as Saint Joan of Arc.
