Optimally, you will have the subsidy code from the provider of the phone. In that case, you can enter it in on your keypad. The rest depends on the model phone you have. There are some resources online (some free, some pay) that will allow you to unlock your phone depending on the model, by just using the keypad. Others require the use of a USB or Serial cable. Others may have to be sent in to an unlocking service.

If it is a t-mobile phone.. call thier customer service line and they will give you a code to do it... if it is verison they run on CDMA and cant be unlocked... nokia, motorola, samsung they can be unlocked but depending on your current phone subscriber, they might not be helplful because you are basically telling them you are going to be using thier sevice anymore. If you are traveling... which is why you want to unlock it... make sure the frequency of your phone is correct... there are 4, 850/900/1800/1900... quad band phones are out there but most are tri or dual. It would suck to have your phone not work cause of the wrong frequency of the country you are in. You can check ebay for unlocked phones and find them real cheap as little as $30...

Depends on what kind of phone you have. If you use GSM (like one with a SIM card -- T-Mobile, Cingular) then you can unlock it to use on other networks for a fee. Try this site below.

It depends on the model. Go to google.com for the phone and see the unlock instructions.
