I'm considering buying a new Legacy sedan (not sure what trim yet). Any current or former Legacy owners with recommendations or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Legacy is a great car - you can get it in a variety of trim levels including the Outback and LL Bean and you can get it as a sedan or wagon. For the money, the Legacy GT is a really great deal as it offers performance numbers that rival cars that are much more expensive, like the BMW 328xi.

Not sure what cars you are looking at, but the Legacy generally competes with Camrys, Accords, Galants, Altimas, and other midsize sedans, but it offers awd while the rest are all fwd.

Awd is something you can only get on a a Volvo S40, Chrysler 300 Touring, or Ford Fusion for anywhere near the prices of a Subaru or other competitors. The Volvo and Fusion are nice so you may want to look at them, but Ford's resale value over 3 years is poor. I think the Fusion is based on the Volvo platform, so its essentially the same hardware in two distinct packages. The 300 Touring is a huge car that is also a worthy comparison, buts large size may make it hard to park.

The Audi A4 quattro and BMW 328xi are the next best step up. The Audi starts at $31k and the BMW starts at $35k and will easily option out over $40k.

The awd system is very well developed and Subarus have great reliability. Historically they were underpowered cars popular mainly in the north and in the mountains, but as SUVs have grown in popularity, the Subaru has become more popular as it offers the same utility as an SUV but with a lower center of gravity, better handling, and better mpg. This all equates to a really safe car with excellent NHTSA crash ratings.

The current generation Subaru is getting great reviews. You can read about it at sites like http://www.Edmunds.com where you can read user reviews, or http://caranddriver.com where you can read the road tests and see how it compares to the competition. There is also a good online and local communities for them. Check out http://legacygt.com/ and talk with the owners.

Subarus do not have rust problems maybe in the 70s and early 80s, but not today.

The rear seat room is not as spacious as that of an Accord, but the driving dynamics are best in class, and its one of the few cars you can get with a manual transmission if you wanted.

The interiors are nice - not best in class, but you can get power heated leather seats and navigation, and nice amenities offered by other sedans.

The engines are essentially detuned WRX STI engines, so it is easy to make more power out of them if you are looking for even better performance. A chip will get the Legacy GT from 0-60 in under 5 seconds - that's performance you usually only get in $40k+ sedans.

Yes, buy a legacy. They well built solid machines. Very safe, good on gas for it's class, reliable and roomy and good re-sale value too. I used to be a service advisor for different dealers before my accident. One of the best cars on the market is Subaru. The AWD system is one of the best in the world.
I am still driving my '93 Legacy.
North American Legacy's are built in Lafayette, Indiana. Toyota now owns about 10%. They have a 2.5 litre boxer 4 cylinder engine that gives 173 hp. the turbo give you 250 hp. Keep the maintenance up and the car will last a long time. Pick a good dealer.

I have a 2001 Legacy L (the base model). It's been the most reliable car I've owned. It delivers 165hp out of the 2.5 litre four, more than enough to suit my purposes. There is a sticker indicating it was built in Indiana; I can't say if they're all built there.

The SUS is a superb Subaru, yet it has the two.5 DOHC engine it particularly is renown for eventual head gasket failure with the unique headgaskets. So in case you're fortunate and it particularly is barely a valve or head gasket difficulty, for variety of $a million,500 in upkeep you're able to be on the line in a solid Subaru. until eventually, needless to say, there are undisclosed themes.

Yes, my feelings on the Legacy, are that they are a great car. The only down fall I can see with them, is that they do rust out after 5-6 years. (I live in the Northeast). Other that that, in the spring, that's the kind of car, or similar, that I will be shopping for. My wife likes, them. I drive a Silverado Crew Cab 1500HD. The car will be for her.

one thing first, decide how long you want to keep it,once out of warranty the cost of repairs car be wild, just check out some common repair parts and then decide how long you will keep it
eg: legacy outback rear struts were 900.00 pr and not available from parts stores, this may have changed by now
good cars otherwise
