I was in the garden the other night and all I heard was a crunching sound - like chewing grass or something - Then I noticed a slug in my rockery - It must have been this causing the noise as nothing else was around

Do slugs crunch their food?

No, they kind of munch quietly; they have good manners

You must have some good ears. They do eat at night, and they have a raspy like mouth, but they prefer to eat expensive orchids over plain old grass.

Yes, slugs (and snails) make an incredible noise when they are eating. It's very helpful, you can hear where they are so you can put salt on the little b@stards.
