Well, I've heard that sharks attack when they smell blood, and ummm... essentially your period IS blood. So, do sharks attack women on their periods more than other people?

"There are few reported shark attacks on women, and there are no data to support the belief that menstruating females are at an increased risk for shark attacks. But we went to an oceanographer and here is his take on the issue! It has been recommended that a menstruating woman should abstain from swimming in areas where sharks are nearby in order to minimize the risks of attracting sharks. This assumes, of course, that her flow is somehow getting into the water, and with the options available to women today this may not be the case. But it is possible for sharks to sense these fluids and investigate further. Assume that sharks might do this, and common sense should dictate the rules. So, swimming when you are menstruating is fine as long as you are using a tampon!"

it states:
"This is a question which diving instructors are frequently asked by female divers, or their concerned partners, and it is one of the most frequently asked questions on the Divers Alert Network website. In reality, the average blood lost during
menstruation is so small amounting to just a few mls per dive (50-150 mls occurring over several days) that the loss is insignificant.
With the use of tampons, there is no external blood
loss anyway. Also, it is known that many shark species are not attracted to the blood and other debris found in menstrual flow and Dr Carl Edmonds has even speculated that this may be due to a repellent effect of some component in menstrual blood. In reality, the chance of being attacked during your menstrual period is probably far less than from activities such as spear-fishing. There are few reported shark attacks on
women, and there are no data to support the belief that menstruating females are at an increased risk for shark attacks."

My friend says to "Plug It"
But anyway no that can't happen.
While your in water your period stops kind of.
That doesn't mean don't use a tampon while your in the water it will still happen and that ends in a very gross way!

Uh, aren't you using a tampon when you go swimming?? Since it stops the flow, you don't need to worry about it.

You should read this weeks TIME article about "Why We Worry About the Wrong Things"!! :)
