Yes, it has been 18 months. Most people only receive unemployment for 6 months. There is NO EXCUSE for not being able to find a job in a year and a half. Since you had rent paid for most of that time, you should have been able to save at least $500 a month for a year, which would mean you should have a savings account of $6000... seems like enough to "get back on your feet" with.
For those who are saying we spend more on Iraq... the difference is that Iraqis cannot get to work without fear of bombings or kidnappings, Katrina folk have no such worries. Iraqis have electricity for a couple of hours a day, K-folk have no such worries. Iraqis live in a war zone, K-folk have no such worries. Most importantly, K-folk are able bodied people who should be trying to rebuild New Orleans. Anyone who isn't and still isn't working is merely attempting to leach off society. I heard someone the other day call it a form of reparations and I have to say, I agree. There comes a time when enough is enough. How much help can you extend before it simply becomes a lifestyle?
When the hurricanes ripped the roof off of my home in 2004 no one came to my aid. Nor did I expect anyone to. I took my insurance check and my checkbook and paid for the darn roof. Then I kept on working and paying my taxes, since that is what decent people do.

You're assuming that everyone is an able-bodied healthy young person who can get a job easily. There are many people who relocated that are elderly, ill, or a single parent with children. These people lost everything they had--not just materials but also relationships that help support them (i.e. people to look after their kids while they are at work). You also assume that job hunting is easy--but the sad part is that even white collar jobs and teachers have a hard time getting a job. Now I am not saying that people should just depend on the government forever. I believe people should try to get out of a bad situation, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't help people when they are in need. Assistance is good to help people get back on their feet; otherwise you'll have a larger population of people that are indigent.

With what huh? they lost everything from socks to jobs. there is no work place for these poepl to go right back to, no home no nothing. Im in Pennsylvania and never had to go through with that kind of problem but its tragic. Its a shame how people act like they could do things differently but dont woory 1 day it might happen to you and we will see if you get relief fast or not. Unless you got alot of money you can only live off yourself or others for so long.

I guess that it will be hard to do for themselves since they don't have anything to help themselves with.
