i always wonderd this, How do they do it? why do they do it? and do u have to be dilated in order to do it?

My Doctor broke mine with a little tool that looks like a crochet hook. They just puncture the sac and let it start to drain...I was dilated and in labor.

Doctors break the water bag to speed up labor because contractions get stronger and you dilate faster when your water is broken. They do it with a long plastic rod with a little hook on the end. In most cases, you cannot even feel it. They typically will not do this unless you are at least 50% effaced and at least 3 dilated. Hope this helps :)

It's called an amnio hook. (used to break amniotic water)..looks like a cross between a crochet hook and a knitting needle.
Should NOT hurt at all. Usually done during a contraction so that your amniotic sac is bulging a bit. Is thought to speed labour up some.
You do not have to be fully dilated, but there is no reason to do it unless the labour process has already started.
Sometimes it is also done to see if meconium is in the water.
(your babies poop) Will show if the baby is in possible distress.

YEs, you have to be dilated to do this. They take a plastic wand with a hook at the end of it and insert it into the vagina, up into the uterus through the cervix and "hook" the placenta and make a tear in it. This releases the amniotic fluid. They'll do this to speed up labor if it's been going on for a long time. It makes contractions stronger and more effective at pushing baby out.

They can break your water by either using a little plactic hook or by using a metal instrument. Sometimes they'll only strip your membranes to weaken them so you'll have your water break on your own. They usually wait until you're dilated to do it. Usually they do it to help labor progress. Once your water breaks the contractions become much stronger and more productive.

you have to be dilated, enough to get it in. It looks like a plastic ice pick.All you'll feel is water and the contractions. I had it done and had the baby in 1 hr to 1 1/2hr. That's not normal really fast. They had to give me special meds to make sure I didn't bleed to death. I was ok and the baby was fine!

ok ,lets not nit pick the spelling here! anyway, you do need to be dialated. When they break your waters, they will use something that looks like a knitting needle and they will insert and break it. Its that simple. It may be a little uncomfortable, especially if you haven't started really laboring. Otherwise you probably won't notice it, it feels much like a pelvic exam to check your cervix.

they broke my water with both my boys and i can only remember them showing this long thin looking thing with a little hook at the end. I guess when your cervix starts to open they put it in there and break your water with the little hook lol goodluck

Yep looks like a crochet needle and it doesnt hurt, its a relief. They do it because you may be in labor and the water just hasnt broken, I know it happened to me with my second child.
