+ The job is the same as the Captain of any vessel. The pay depends on the shipping line, Vacation ??? Well it depends on how much you can take. I have a friend Capt Volpe who works for Carnival, he has been there for many years and seems happy. I met his family who was with him on the Spirit out of Los Angeles CA a couple of years ago so there are possibilities. You need to achieve a master Mariners Capt license and that does not mean you will be the Captain, that just gets you a deck officers job. Politics play into it as well.

To add to the above statements. Just like an airline captain, a cruise ship captain is at the pinnacle of his career and normally it takes years of service for a company to rise to the job. You start low and work your self up. RC's has two captains per ship one off and on. (Not to drink - Ha Ha that is a good one).
Research maritime schools to get training as an officer.

"vaction?" is you work 6mos. one way or the other & you're off the same. just be aware that the captain is responsible for every person on the ship...passengers and crew. trust me, they can all be a p.i.t.a. small ferries in the leeward islands are better as far as fun and lack of stress...money is pretty good, too. do you like RUM???

safety of passengers,crew,and ship .. licensed captain controls all aspects of the ship, from personal problems of the crew, passengers, navigating charts, every thing that is on the liner, they have people under him/her that control different aspects, and the chain goes on, but gets reported back to the captain, who has the final decision,rate of pay depends on the contract, usually around 60 to 95 k per yr, normal vacation period pending contract agreement, IF you are thinking of a career decision like this, the benefits out weigh the job, try to get a job on a liner for a year, and see how you like it, but don't forget about ship hours, it is not 7 to3 or any thing like that, try it ,, it is not going to kill ya and you will see some cat asss places and get paid...
