I am a US trained and licensed psychiatrist looking perhaps to retire to Costa Rice, however would like to continue to work part time. What would be the process to be licensed / credentialed to work as a psychiatrist in Costa Rica. Is that even possible? Thanks!

I think it is very possible to become licensed in Costa Rica. You need to contact the Costa Rican College of Physicians (Colegio de Médicos) and bring all your diplomas, transcripts, licensure, etc. from the U.S. and if they find that everything is O.K., you can practice psychiatry in Costa Rica. Everything will have to be translated into Spanish by a Costa Rican certified translator and you will have to have all your documents authenticated in the U.S. before you bring them to Costa Rica.

The website for the Colegio de Médicos is:
http://www.medicos.sa.cr/Inicio/
(it's in Spanish but I'm sure they have bilingual secretaries to reply to your e-mail).

I am sorry I do not know the answer to your question but you seem like the person that would know the answer to my question. I had a minor in Psychology when I graduated with a bachelor of art degree in art. If I wanted to continue school at the ripe old age of 47, how many years would it take me to become a psychiatrist?....by the way Costa Rica? That is a great spot! A great career and a great setting....sounds like the best of both worlds! Good luck

Oh yeah! they definetely need psychiatrists down there...lotz of crazy people ...haha...I love that country. The lady above answered your question. If you are planning to work for a hospital, there's this place in Pavas that's supposed to be haunted and when I was in HS (about 10 years ago) there was this guy who used to sing and dance in downtown SJ that escaped from that hospital. hahaha...Oh! rumors are that many supernatural things happen in that hospital. Gosh! it's creapy, I remember when my friends and I drove there one time at night. hahaha...anyways, back to your question: "the lady above answered your question."
