I think about this sometimes, too. The resilience of the human spirit is just amazing. It seems that we have an incredible capacity for grief. Even if one manages to go along through life relatively unscathed personally by tragedy on a grand scale (eg, war, famine, natural disasters, etc), there's no avoiding the fact that, at the very least, we will lose people we love when they die; and that's just if we are getting off lightly! I guess it's about acceptance, adaptability, and ultimately, our very strong instinct for survival that pushes us through and keeps us looking for the silver lining, even if we don't want to (haven't you ever been depressed or grieving and one day found yourself feeling hopeful and happy again despite yourself? - I think that's a fantastic thing).
Also, I guess it's just physically and emotionally impossible to sustain most strong, intense feelings (grief, anger, joy) over an extended period of time (for instance, your entire lifetime). We need a break from the good feelings AND the bad feelings... otherwise we WOULD break down and die from the stress of the intensity of the emotions.
What a long, strange trip it is...we're all just along for the ride, aren't we?

A lot.
Grief doesn't hit us all at once. We get grief in varying degrees and some of us learn to deal with them so that when something more devastating comes along we can cope with it eventhough it hurts like hell. Some people cannot cope with it but they have their reasons. For the most part we can endure a lot of grief, it all depends on our attitude and resilience.

A lifetime of grief can only be endured with times of laughter included. We must all find time for laughter, and if it can't be found we must make time. They actually compliment each other.

I truly believe it's a good thing that happens..imagine we were laughing and happy everyday from the moment we are born to the moment we die..Yeah sure we would have really good abs but being happy would be meaningless...won't be the same

That's a question that takes a lifetime to answer...and frankly, most of us don't have the guts to...
