If a woman is 4 weeks pregnant, does that mean its been 4 weeks from her ovulation/conception date or 4 weeks since the first day of her last period?

If I am 12 weeks pregnant, then that means I had my period 12 weeks ago, right? My friend is saying she is 4 weeks along and she is counting from her conception date.

How does it work?

The due date is calculated from the first day of the womans last period. That means you are actually about 2 weeks along at the time of conception!
If you are 12 weeks, then yes, your last period started 12 weeks ago and you conceived about 10 weeks ago. If your friend conceived 4 weeks ago she is actually about 6 weeks along now.

The due date is 280 days from the first day of the last period.

when the doctor takes blood, they can guess how far along you are. if you know the date you conceived, you can count from there. the doc will also estimate a due date for you based on the first day of your last period and count 40 weeks. the reason they do this is not because the first day of your last period is absolutely the day you conceived (this should be obvious) but because most women don't know the exact second. it's a guess. the due date is at 40 weeks, but they always say plus or minus 2 weeks because they are guessing.

The way you are figuring it out is correct......your pregnancy starts on the 1st day of your last period.
If she's 4 wks. preg. it's been 4 wks. since her last period.

Go to Babycenter.com. They explain a lot of that there when you register on how they calculate.
