the first sign of a hot water heater going bad is warm water instead of hot or very limited supply of hot water and of course no hot water at all. Its very easy to check the elements in a water heater which is actually what would be going bad. To check them first turn the power off to the unit at the breaker then hook a water hose to the supplied nipple at the bottom of the tank then open the valve and let all the water drain out. There should be two blue covers on the side of the tank with two retaining screws holding them in place. Take the covers off and you will find two elements with wires going go them. Take a common voltage meter and turn it to ohms. put one of the leads from the meter on one of the wires and the other lead on the other wire. The needle should rise to the other side or in case of a ditial meter the reading will change to the resistance of the element. If you get no reading on the meters the elements are bad and need to be replaced. most elements just screw out, the numbers should be on the element but if you have any problems Im sure the hardware store will help you.

First question is why are you trying to heat hot water? It is a water heater only. If you hear a popping sound when the burner is on then there is a build-up of sediment in the bottom of the tank. If the burner is not working then check and make sure the pilot is lite. If it not try to re lite it following the instructions and cautions printed on the tank. If nothing works then you may need to have it replaced.

Is the water hot? It is working. Is the water only warm and it used to be hot? You could have a build up of sediment in the tank preventing the water from heating (especially with gas water heaters). Drain water from the bottom of the tank. If it is rusty then you have found your problem. Keep draining until it runs clear. I would suggest turning off the water heater before doing this.

Is it Electric or Gas water heater, First if its gas, up the temp, and look under the panel that covers the burner, is it on- If its Electric check for power, it its present at the Element and no hot water, you have a burned out heat Element. Be careful.
