Boil the kettle, squeeze a lemon into it. Alternatively, use lemon essential oil. It's a natural antibacteriant and works wonders. The smell is also distasteful to dogs and cats, so it might discourage your pooch, slightly...

Wash the floor with Nature's Miracle. You can find it a pet stores, like PetCo, on line at Foster's Smith and in some big box discounters. It is non-toxic, has natural enzymes that will break down the urea which is what causes the smell, it will penetrate into the grout to destroy the odor causing bacteria and it won't harm your old fur friend. It isn't very expensive, especially when you buy it in the gallon size. Once you wash the floor the first time, you can mix it with water in a spray bottle and treat only the areas he pees on.

Another hint, if you buy wee wee pads (the kind that they use in newborns cribs or for house training puppies) and put them where he tends to pee, clean up will be easier. When my old Boo became incontinent, I would buy them and put them where he laid down. They catch the urine and keep it from saturating through to the floor underneath. You simply throw them away.

Try sprinkling baking soda and a few drops of water to moisten the mixture. Let that sit. It helped remove the smell from my carpet after my mothers 16 year old dog peed on it. Because he is so old, he does not get enough water and his kidneys are failing - this is what is contributing to the horrible smell. There are products on the market that help too, but cost more than baking soda. I also tried Orange glow or googone on wood that was saturated with urine from my other dogs and this worked as well.

There are several remedies for the smell. You could try ammonia and water, lemon juice or oil, and also bleach.

Also, if your dog is a spayed female, lack of estrogen tends to make them incontinent of urine when older, and the vet could give you a prescription for estrogen to restore natural estrogen levels, which might help.

You will have to get a product that has active enzymes in it. They eat away the odor causing bacteria. I'm not sure if there are any available in the stores. I work at a school and we use it in the urinals and on the walls around them. The enzymes actually eat away the bacteria. Good luck.

You could try sprinkling bicarbonate soda over the floor, leave it for 10 minutes and then vacum it off. Bicarb is great for getting rid of smells. Ive used it on my carpet and have never had a problem.

The problem is once it's into the grout, you're screwed. The only product that worked for us we bought at Petco, it's an unscented neutralizer specifically for dog urine. It's expensive, but it works. Good Luck.
