I thought I was the only one who thought Tom Petty sounded like he was whining when he sang.

Tom Petty's songs and the way they are sung have connected with a significant number of people making him a successful musician. Because his singing style is successful, he has opted not to change.

I don't find him whiney at all. And he writes his own songs which is more than most "musicians" these days can say. Now if you want whiney, listen to that Unfaithful song by Rihana!
