Secure Socket Layer.

It uses one time public encryption to secure the connection between the sever and you. How it works... The server and you both have a public fingerprint for your machines. Basically you send a request to the server of which the server replies with there key and a start code. Your machine acknowledges the code and sends back its half. The 2 crunch there numbers and create a one time key for the encryption. Once it is done, all traffic between your machine and that server is secure as no one can read what is being sent. Even with a packet sniffer and such.
