I see people all the time doing the same in hotel parking lots, (I travel for a living). Why don't the hotels bust them?

The story about IBM was their IT manager was wondering why he was seeing so much bandwidth usage on holidays, when no one was in the building in New Jersey. He noticed cars in the parking lot and traced the signals.

Boom, the folks were busted for tresspassing and stealing services (the signal).

If a hotel walked up to someone in their parking lot, they could just say "I was about to check-in, in fact, I'm booking this hotel online at this very moment"

Hard to prove intent to steal services at that point, same think with a potential tresspass charge.

The people at IBM were doing whats called WarDriving and accessing a unsecure wireless network. Hotels offer wireless to there patrons and they could all the cops on the people in the parking lot but they do not want to lose potential customers.

IBM wants to protect its network from those people and save its monthly cost on bandwidth usage by the people who are abusing there network. IBM is not afraid of calling the cops on those people.

More than likely the IBM HQ has a secure wireless network. If the people using their network hacked into their wireless, then it is illegal. Hotels have open networks. Therefore, anyone can pull up and hop on.

Hotels don't care because nothing is being taken from them really. IBM has alot of trade secret information that could be obtained by someone on thier network and potentially sold to competitors.

well it is simple cuz the hotel air-port is legal. u can use them .. some of them u must pay and some of them are not.. but the IBM conniction is not for ppl.. it is only for work.. and if we went some Cafes you will find ppl using the internet in their places.. which means it is legal.. they give you the user name and the password.. so while you are drinking or anything you can use the internet.. it is like a way to bring customers
