I think dogs are. You don't (usually) have to give cats a bath, so they never smell. They aren't messy eaters, don't drool, and their litter box only smells when you don't clean it. I'd much rather clean a litter box than chase a dog around outside in the rain with a little plastic baggie.

Depends if we are talking mud dirt or hygiene dirt.
Dog of course love to be in the mud, like little kids.

A cat poops and pees on a daily bases in the house, is encouraged too. Unlike dogs who get trained to go outside. A cats urine smells as a man made chemical does. Elaborate here...
As I was in the carpet business I was sent out to a empty rental. Walking in to see what needed to be done. I smelt cat right away which was not uncommon. Renters who are pet owners do a lot of damage to houses. Anyhoo I started my machine and within five minutes maybe 10 I had to leave the house, throwing up, eyes waters etc. I had to call my boss and have someone else come in and finish. It was not cat urine but a drug house...I could not tell the diffarence...
Dogs do physical damage such as ripping up fences, carpets even destroying furniture. This does not hurt our health, unless we are talking stress!

Not only do dogs bite (or can bite people and treat kids as another animal) but cats can and will smother a baby. Laying on the babies chest, smothering the baby (this is documented), suggestion from my doctor when pregnant was not to clean the cat box for cat defecation it will hurt my unborn baby.
Cats dig holes for there bathroom which gets under there claws, a cat can and will retract its claws getting on a person, on the counters, on the furniture, all with this cat poop or pee on there paws. However dog will get this on the bottom of there paws and bring it into the house as well, never seen a dog on the counter and oven though?
It is quite often to see peoples "pet" cats roaming the streets. A tom cat will slaughter baby kittens of a mother who bred with a different Tom cat. This Tom cat who just did what cats do will then come into the house and get onto the furniture etc. This is sick if you ask me! Dogs I have never seen or had to clean up after a attack is over.
Dogs lick a person in the face if not trained not too. A cat will too, and loves ear wax.
Cats urine very acidy, dogs is not(or as much) ..

We personally no longer have a cat, the stench is just to much to deal with.....there is more I am sure but at this moment this is what I can think of. Depends what a person wants to put up with...

Ever here the saying "crazy cat lady" ever here the expression "crazy dog lady" lol! Every town it seams like has a old crazy cat lady.....

I think one could discuss this for yeeears and never come to a definite answer.
Knowing cats and dogs I tell you, BOTH can be quite dirty.
Cats with fishy breath... dogs who tap-danced where they shouldn't... cats with "personality" (like my friend's cat that got mad and pooped on his TV)... dogs who didn't get dried/washed properly after walking in the rain (that wet dog smell UGH!)... cat who puts dead mouse / bird as a present on your pillow...
Every dog and cat is different,
but if you're lucky to have some well-behaved cat, and your cat litter is faaaar away from everything, then I gotta say cats usually are less WORK to keep clean (depending how much they stay outside, if they're shedding, if they ate something that's giving them bad gas etc etc...), since their licking does work like a bath and their fur won't stink so much...
Both are great as pets, some match this or that kind of person, but I gotta say, as much work as a dog is, I'd rather have a hairy dog I gotta walk and groom than a nice smelling cat with a crazy attitude (gotta love their sense of humor though).
Now if you're talking about diseases and germs....

I have several cats and dogs. They both have their pros and cons.
Cats do use a litter box and are easily trained to it, but they also tend to toss litter all over the floor. Our cats will dump their food if they don't like how it tastes.
Dogs on the other hand can go outside to go the bathroom... you have to clean that up occasionally too. Ours killed a tree using it as a potty area last winter. They also are much harder to house break. I have Yorkies and my little one still has lots of problems with this issue. Their biggest fault is when they get to run around in our green space behind the fence, the like to roll in deer poop or what ever other really stinky substance they can find.

Both of them give us a lot of love though, and the problems are well worth it.

OK

I read the answers given to this question and I should say that I am pretty much amazed by how stupidly people can think.

Dogs are clean and cats are dirty coz dogs are taken out to poop and cats do it in the litter pan, and litter pan is dirty???

Apparently people failed to realized that cats use litter pan only becoz they are clean. It is a consequence of being clean. Use of litter pan cannot be why cats are dirty. To make a good comparison, pls compare a dog who poops inside the house or a cat who is taken out to poop. Then you may have a more accurate judgement.

Dogs are dirty coz they eat anything including ****, their breathe smells worse, they mess up ur apartment pretty bad, some drool, they are clutzy, and even u take them out to poop they may still find it more convenient to poop right in the middle of ur room.

Cats are clean coz naturally they cover up their dirt (they must have a feeling that a dirt is dirty unlike dogs) they spend a lot of time licking themselves clean. And they dont pick up trash from trash can and spread it over ur apt.

I'd say a dog. Cats clean themselves, and when nature's calling, they cover their traces well (unless we're talking spraying territory here). Dogs have to be washed, and the term "smell like a wet dog" isn't a positive thing ;p And when they go, they have to be taken out, and you have to pick up after them (even if many people don't ¬_¬). Dogs are generally larger, so when they shed, they shed more. Cats aren't the only animal you can be allergic to, and often when you are allergic to cats, chances are you're allergic to other furred animals too (I know I am, as well as 90% of my family).

People who have said that cats are dirtier obviously haven't seen cats groom themselves! Have you ever heard the expression u smell like a dog! Never u smell like a cat. Cats hate to be dirty so they constantly groom themselves, they also bury their waste so that they dont have to walk in it. Now I love dogs and cats equally but dogs just aren't as clean, they roll in dead things and don't care to clean themselves, but hey that's just what they do.

Definitely a dog. Cats are pretty clean animals, they lick themselves clean, their bodies dont smell and their breath isnt bad. Cats have litter boxes that keep all their waste under control, but dogs poop all over the yard or in the park and someone has to pick it up. Dogs have to be bathed by its owner in order to keep it smelling clean and dogs have stinky breathe. Cats may not be the easiest to take care of but they sure do take care of the cleanness for you.

I have had and still do , cats and dogs , cats are dirty er with the litter and hair , but you can leave a cat at home by it self and not worry about it if food and water is left out , a dog has to be let out every few hrs . good and bad in both

Dogs tend to be smellier and dirtier, especially the ones with long fur.

Cats clean themselves, and their fur is very silky, so dirt doesn't stick to them very well.

Male cats and dogs should be nuetered, as this will reduce the odor of both.
