i have a 2000 jeep cherokee and it goes into 4wd at some times, but i don't understand why it doesn't go into 4wd when i pulling someone up the hill

part time is when it is not a full time 4x4

meaning it has a means to put it into 2wd

in which most vehicles are

but a few are AWD/full time

this started in 74 when the NP 203 iron case chain driven case came out, used in many vehicles including ford chevy dodge trucks mainly

such as in my 77 K-10, it is full time 4x4 NP203 equipped, it has no 2 wheel drive position/ability,
