Laying turf is fast, simple and gives you an instant lawn. However, it's expensive.

Sowing your own grass seed is cheaper, but takes a whole load of work preparing the surface, sowing the seeds, covering them up, watering and waiting.

Which one is better depends on your personal situation and cash flow as well as the size of the area where the grass will be.

For me it is instantaneous gratification! With turf, I'm not waiting for those first blades of grass to sprout, I have a beautiful lawn to start out with. Whenever I sow seed, I fight off the birdies who love to feast on my seeds, I'm somehow always a little disappointed that I didn't get even coverage and have to re-seed in areas I missed. I also don't like having straw or hay as a cover and waiting for it to break down. Plus, the preparation work it takes to sow the seeds is back breaking and laborious. Obviously it is a lot less expensive to sow seed but to me, I pay for it with the time it takes to become the lawn I wanted in the first place.
