About time. We shouldn't pamper people just because they don't speak the language. If you live or reside in America you better @%!& well learn English. Aside from that, if these people are not American citizens we shouldn't keep them in our prisons. Send them back to whatever country it is they come from.

How do you get a prisoner to comply when the prisoner doesn't understand what you are saying?
No matter where you stand on the whole "English as the official language and everyone should learn it" issue, this seems like very bad policy. It's good that they are offering English classes, however, until the prisoner gets a handle on the language, there is no way for the prison workers and prisoners to communicate.

Even a total jack@ss can understand what is expected of them while they are in jail. If someone is ill, I'm sure a translator will be provided to discuss medical issues. Other than that, what's the big deal? All the more reason why illegals who are busted should be deported immediately. Our prison systems are already overburdened with American criminals. Taking on additional costs like paying the salaries of ESL teachers should not be the burden of the penal system.

Get some Spanish speaking guards, no offense to them, but I'm sure there's plenty of Latino security guards in California.
This way, by hiring some of the illegals as the security guards, they can kill 3 birds with one stone, so to speak, by getting illegals to do something for our country, give the prison the type of guards it needs, and keep those same illegals who become guards out of the very same jail (for smuggling pot, etc.) by doing so.

If your question is purely about language, it is, at least for me, insignificant. After all, language is only a means of communication.
But if you are pointing at Hispanics, you are a racist and wrong. Crimes rates are tied to low education and poverty, among many other things.

I am not in favor of this policy. Many of these are illegals and will be deported.
How can they communicate basic needs?
Honestly, this is my first awareness of this, so I haven't thought it through, but this is my gut instinct on the issue.
Schools? Good policy.

It's in CA and not mexico-why should we pay interpretors for criminals. Get imprisoned in Russia, Mexico or any other country that doesn't speak English and see what happens. SOL.
