I never got an allowance until I got a job.
What are you considering "the necessities"? Food? Clothes? Parents can cover all that, but should then have more or all of the say in what is bought. Make-up, hair stuff, highlights definitely, recreation, all that is optional and should be covered by the teenager out of their own pocket.

Most people suggest $1 per year of age, so a $15 per week would be a good amount. You should still provide her with the necessities like clothes, books and basic toiletries, plus a few perks (makeup, designer clothes, etc) every now and then. She is old enough to be earning her own money by babysitting, tutoring or doing yardwork, so if she wants to get her hair highlighted in a salon she should start saving! Actually, she may even be old enough to get a real part-time job (depending on where you live and the different laws in that area), in which case you shouldn't pay for any extra perks unless she works a bit (four to twelve hours per week is a good amount for a teenager- one evening and one weekday day still lets her see her friends and do her homework).

As long as your child does the expected chores, I think that age = money is appropriate.
Example ~ 15 years = 15 dollars
I think children should be responsible to pay for extras out of their own pocket...
Examples ~ highlights, tanning, movies, accessories, etc...
Mom and Dad should provide make-up, hair products
(shampoo, conditioner, mousse) and other necessities.
The make-up may be controversial... I think it depends if you bought her the make-up in the first place.

I think that a teenager should be able to focus on school, so you should provide all the things that they need and any thing else that's not a necessity they should purchase themselves spoken from experience teenagers should learn responsibility but they are still your responsibility!!! It really hurts teenagers to have jobs after school unless its just a couple of hours!! If they are not at the age to work for the money they need to purchase other stuff they want! That's where allowance comes in.... Have them do things for you and pay them for what they do.... my dad use to give me $10 a week and it lasted me all week
Good Luck

very tricky, yes this one is. I pay my daughter 20.00 a wk, but if she spent all her money on personal items or organic food, I slide and pay for some of her activities myself. My daughter is in the top 4% in her class, so she has some extra for sure. I figured if I started out at 20.00 a wk, she would only spend 40 or less a wk, where as before, I got no help with the house work and she spent over 50 dollars a week, but didn't realize until she started getting her own allowance. Now she wants to babysit to make more money, somethings working, good luck to you, because everybody is different. For instance a couple of friends of her were getting 50 a wk, crazy right,I talked to their parents and that came to an end, because it made my daughter say, but mom sally's mom gives her this, you know where I'm going with this right. So, basically I saved the other parents from getting run over by their daughters ans it worked, we won, yeah.Remember, kids this age have a brain and now how to use them to get what they want. Good luck in your decision.

I'd say 10 to 20 dollars a week. At 15, it may be hard for them to find job--many places will not hire a person for most jobs until they turn 16 (or 18 in some cases). Parents should always pay for neccesities--food, hair products, school supplies, clothing, medical care, etc. He/She can use their allowance to pay for the rest (movies, make-up, highlights, etc), except for those times you decide to treat him/her.

I would say all of the above are treats and should be paid out of thier pocket
a 15 yr old should get about £20 pr month - with extras if they help with chores - wash the car - mow the lawn - help with cleaning etc..
Also they could get a job - to learn the value of money - babysitting - newspaper delivery

10$ a week.
you can give them extra money (like 5$) if they want to go to the movies, or you can drive them around. other than that, they can pay for their own snacks, birthday presents for other people.... you can pay for their hair products. if they want highlights, make them pay for the highlights themselves. tell them highlights also cost about 25$ every 3 months to keep up with them, and that having highlights is a lot of responsibility, because you have to really take care of your hair. makeup--get a lot of it for them for christmas, or any other holiday--if they want more, they should buy it themselves.
and getting an allowance, shouldnt they be doing chores too, so they understand the concept of earning the money, not just getting it?
