Stanley Tookie Williams III was born 12/29/53 and executed 12/13/05.
He was an early leader of the street gang the Crips and he was ececuted for the 1979 murders of four citizens which he carried out while serving as a leader of the notorious gang.
There's much speculation on whether he was "respected" or not - he was critcized for not aiding police with any information against his gang while in prison. Yet in 1993 his behavior changed, he renounced his gang affiliation, apologized for founding the Crips gang but maintained he was innocent of the crimes unto which he had been convicted.
While in prison he co-wrote childrens books and participated in efforts to prevent youths from joining gangs.
As to whether he should be respected for anything done within his life - it depends on who you speak to.

Born on 29 December, 1953, Stanley "Tookie" Williams was executed by the state of California on 13 December of last year (2005), having been found guilty of murdering four people in 1979. He was a co-founder of The Crips -- the other original co-founder was killed in 1979 (not related to murders Mr. Williams was convincted of in 1981).
While I respect his efforts to encourage inner city kids to avoid gangs and the gang lifestyle (as a public speaker and co-author of books) from prison, it doesn't change the fact he was found guilty of murdering those four people. The state of California chose to enforce the death penalty after over 20 years of appeals.
This is a very emotionally charged and controversial question in Southern California, still, because it runs across race, death penalty, and victims' rights issues. I hope you get the answers you're seeking and are tolerant of others' views on this matter.

I don't know the answers to all the questions, but what I do know is that Tookie Williams was Fine and I love his Body he was in great health I don't think that he was as harsh as the police made him out to be another than I do know is that he has to answer to God for all that he did that was wrong and not man.By the way what little part that I seen on BET it was not proven that he killed those four white people the police could prove that he did the crime I think that they was afraid of him and he was getting to powerful for them so you know peace out and may God be with the ones that killed him because they have got to answer for their wrong doings also.

He was born December 29, 1953
He died December 13, 2005
And if he was respected...it was by the crips. He was the leader of a notorious street gang in South Central Los Angeles. In December 2005 he was executed for the 1979 murders of Albert Owens, Yen-Yi Yang, Tsai-Shai Lin, and Yee-Chen Lin.
