I've seen it a couple of times, they turn on the siren, go through the light and turn it off again. Not cool.

I have also seen this mysterious behavior. Although it may be abused, I have faith in our law enforcement professionals. For the most part the under achievers are normally weeded out by fellow officers. If an officer pushes the limits it will eventually turn on them. I have dealt with many uniformed individuals in the armed forces and civilian Peace keeping organizations. I have seen over active officers who like to keep their pencil sharp and citation book handy. Good or bad these few who hide behind the power of the badge will normally float to the top and be either eliminated from service or transferred to a less public assignment.
I fore one have faith in our officers and support them in the seriously dangerous job they have chosen to pursue.
As a citizen you can always get the car number and location and time of day. Most professional organizations will take your call and look into it. Unless they are getting shot at during a traffic stop or rammed into by a drunk driver or getting assaulted during their 5th trip to a domestic dispute where two folks show how much they love each other with a broken wine bottle and a hammer.
So trust that they are doing whats right knowing that you can take a professional and responsible interest in law enforcement activities that you see from day to day.
Oh yea. I have seen it a few times. Normally they are no longer in view when the light turns green for us to go. However, twice I have forgotten about it only to see the police cars a few blocks down the road at car wrecks.

Not only the cops. Here in the Philippines, anyone who feels he's a VIP (or at least feels closely related to a VIP) will use lights and sirens in their private vehicles to weave through traffic.
BTW, there is a technology available in some parts of the world (including the US) that allows emergency personnel to use programmed strobes to change traffic lights. The intersection has sensors that detect a certain strobe pattern to change the lights when needed.

Yes I've seen that happen...hey its an advantage of being a cop....doesn't seem like a big deal when you think about the fact that they put their life on the line everyday.

Cops do that all the time for some mysterious reason or another. I did know one Cop who did that to get to his favorite burger place for lunch when he was in a rush, but that was an exception not a rule.

yes. my daughter was in the hospital and there was a big snowstorm and i couldn't get my car out so the police came to get me and take me to the hospital. it was a bit of an emergency so the officer turned on his lights to get through the stoplights even though he didn't have his siren on and was not speeding. sometimes they have places that they have to get to a little quicker for some reason. although i agree it could be the donut shop, we'll never know.
