It is thought that animals act on animal instinct, whereas human instincts have evolved, so we have both instincts and emotions. However, elephants have been known to cry when a member of their herd has died, and monkeys have also shown signs of emotions. Perhaps animals do feel emotions, it is only because we cannot communicate effectively with them, that we do not know.

My guess is that there aren't really any differences. Animals feel jealousy, anger, love, compassion, and sadness just like we do. I know my cats do.
