It should be "Linguistic changes 'spread' like waves.

the quote probably needs to be interpreted in context. there is, however, a possibility that "spared" is from old high German. it may be an inflected form of "spare" (pronounced sper) with one meaning being, "relieved of the necessity of undergoing or doing something." ie: changing linguistics may be as difficult as changing a wave.

Unknown. It makes no sense in English. Is this a translation of another language?
Or a typo? 'Sparred' like waves = jostled each other?
Or 'speared' like waves? the changes thrust into one another like spears?

That looks like a typo
I looked up spare at http://www.infoplease.com/dictionary/spare and could find no meaning that fits there.
