Is there a website that can tell you if an email address is real or not? I have a fraudulent mail order done through a website and there is an email address associated with it. I'd like to find out if it's a real email address or a made up one without having to go through subpoena-ing the internet provider (it's a real internet provider).

There is one tool but it may not help you. The tool can actually verify that the user and mailbox really exist, so maybe you'll find it usefull.

Not really. If the address is fake, then you get a mail error report from the server saying the message was not delivered or the that the address does not exist.

There is this software Advanced Administrative Tools, which has as part of its suite:
Email Verifier - is your unique solution for the "message delivery error". You don't need to disturb your clients and friends anymore to verify whether their e-mail addresses are still valid or not. Email Verifier connects directly to their SMTP server and checks it for you. Nothing is sent to the recipient.
