Really who cares but its an intersting question. I remember when it came out, it was a top hit simply cause we all knew someone that song fit like a new glove!
I was in the U.S.Army Nursing school at the time at Ft Bragg,NC during the early 70's and yep we were mainly all men, a few ladies, but without a dought there was one guy that took the song's name, it was his song, he was so,so,so,vain !
What ever happen to James Parish ? He should be about mid 50's, heard he became a Warrent office/PA but not sure, I was to busy doing my own 20+yrs and retired.
I say he was vain but the truth is that he was a good guy, out going, and always a friend ! He just had that something most men would wish they had.
Even today, girls always jump the gun and say "that song is about ??????" you fill in the name !
That song is over 35 years old ~~I think !

I was a radio dj for 7 years, and I've heard two possible suspects that the song may be about....Mick Jagger and James Taylor, but only Carly knows for sure!
