America is not the best country in the free world (or any other world).
1. America traps millions of its own citizens in poverty.
2. America denies basic health care to millions of its own citizens.
3. America is ruled by a president who became president by means of fraud.
4. America's economy is dragged down by the nation's militarism.
5. America's primary and secondary school system was created by big business for the purpose of generating conformity, and it works.
6. America supports genocide committed by other countries who are friendly towards western big business.
7. America ignores genocide committed by people who 'don't matter' against people who 'don't matter.'
8. America has repeatedly interfered in the affairs of other sovereign nations, generally for the purposes of making itself wealthier and improving its ability to control the world.
9. America's mass media is run by big business and is therefore afraid to explore unpleasant truths (see numbers 1 to 8).
Shall I go on? Sure, why not...
10. America drops bombs on children.
11. American snipers shoot children.
12. American foreign policy starves children.
13. American foreign policy leaves sick children to die.
14. America destroyed Nicaragua.
15. America has now destroyed Iraq.
16. America is friends with Saudi Arabia.
17. America looks the other way regarding human rights abuses in China.
Wow, this is getting tiring.
18. American electoral politics is entirely dominated by two parties who disagree on almost nothing of substance.
19. American electoral politics is the preserve of rich people.
20. America is a racist nation (see number 1, for starters).
21. American big cities have murder rates higher than anywhere else in the 'free' world.
22. America is destroying its middle class.
And finally, because I have to stop sometime...
23. Americans habitually deny the truth about America.
(PS I sound like an ideologue, I know, but I am genuinely open to any of the statements above being shown to be false.)

Freedom is a tricky thing to measure. No society is truly free. Noone lives in a society to be truly free. Everytime you pass a law or allow something to happen you are taking away someone elses freedom that doesnt agree with that law or behavior. Americans talk and lecture other countries about freedom because we actually influence other nations which encourage freedom to be spread. Countries like Sweden and Iceland sit in their own little lands having their own freedoms but do they give a damn if anyone else has it? I admire and appreciate every country that gives its citizens basic civil rights that all humans should be afforded by birth. But if you look at the US in the last century you will see a country that has sacrificed quite a bit, a lot more then nations like switzerland and holland, to bring freedom to more people around the world. Did we do this for completely altruistic and unselfish purposes, of course not, but our end results of our actions has helped over a billion people achieve more freedom and our economic actions are helping China push to become more and more free and we will see communism fall in that country in the near future. When Sweden, Iceland, Switzerland, etc give up and sacrifice as much as the US has to spread freedom and democracy across the globe then maybe they can brag some more about their freedoms. No matter what you say about the US, if everyone on this planet had the same basic rights protected under the US Constitution then it would be a much better world and until Denmark can claim its helping anyone else but itself have those rights they cant really talk.

Is America the best country in the free world?..i doubt it..The US is no doubt the wealthiest, most powerful military country on the planet but he reason American is so disliked around the world(try travelling with an American flag on your person) is that Americans just dont care to learn or know about anyone but themselves!...there are about what..240 countries in the world?..how many of you can name the capital cities of say ..Canada or England or Russia?... Americans should realize that not everyone wants to be an American citizen but that the rest of the population of the planet doenst want to be your punching bag either..get a grip on whats going on around the world then maybe, just maybe America would really have the reputation for being the best country in the free world..good luck !
P.S.- to the people who answered this questions a simple yes ..take a look around you..there really are other people on this planet!

The United States, with its faults, is nonetheless the most secure, the safest, and the wealthiest country in the world, with the best prospects for anyone legally immigrating to it.
This all stems for one simple reason: The United States is the monolith of Western society, for which we owe thanks to countries like those in Western Europe, England in particular. The measure of the US is not what we now appear to be, but where we have been; our background, and our history. No one in the history of mankind has stood up for the causes of goodness of liberty like America has.
America is great for the simple reason that it is willing to risk failure to rightly assert its great power to reach good ends, rather than being ruled by fear and uncertainty. It is fear of failure that will, in the end, inevitably lead to crippling indecision and weakness, and spell our doom.
America is the best hope for the world today.

Americans seem to have this mis-guided notion that they are the only people who are patriotic. I applaud you all for your unbridled patriotism but if you really believe you are free, try refusing military service. Other countries are "free" as well, Most Commonwealth countries are. Aussies love their country, Canadians love theirs, Brits love theirs. As a Canadian, I would never consider moving to the U.S.. Doesn't make me anti-U.S., just a proud Canuck. I don't profess to have a better "free" country than you or anyone else and I love my country as much as you do yours.

I not sure we the best, but, the best way to know how great America is, will be look at how many people want in and how many are leaving. I think that shows America is the Best in my opinion.

Tobias, what are you talking about?! America a police state?! Really, go study your history and the cultures surrounding a police state... Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Poland prior to Walesca.... go see what a police state is, and then you won't look like such an idiot. Nobody I know "fears the police." So what are you doing that you shouldn't be doing?

If you want to believe what America says about America, then yes, you will believe we are the best country in the free world.
If you feel like listening to the vast majority of the six billion people who share this planet with us (excepting Prime Minister Blair, of course), and who are effectively ruled by us, then it might sway your over-inflated opinion a tad bit.
