combining two other answers Franco-Prussian, WW1 and 2
Mexico, Algeria and Vietnam didnt work out too well for them, nor did Napoleon's tenure.............in fact, when WAS a war since the Middle Ages that the French won?

Franco-Prussian War! However, many historians argue that this war was actually part of a Prussian conspiracy to take the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine.
In this war France was obligated to fight in, but they did not stand a chance. To quote a modern expression the French got "owned" and the war ended (i believe) in about four weeks.

By the way... people always blame the Napoleonic wars on France.
For my part... I think it would be fairer to put the blame fair and square on Napoleon. The guy was another of those people hungry for power at any cost.

The Franco-Prussian War. It wasn't wise but it was certainly justified as Prussia was deliberately provoking them

Well in WWI and WWII they were attacked by Germany, so they were justified in self defense. However the French War in Indochina was a colonial anachronism and completely unjustified.

The thing is that France sees itself as the peacekeeping force of Europe and as such only participate in wars to "help" out. they send experts to help build bridges and secure areas but hardly to "fight"
Also France is one of the major participants in the UNpeacekeeping force "les casques bleus"
they sent independent forces to Kosovo.
