If he likes to cook, maybe some Emmeral (spelling?) cook ware, or a gift cert to Crate and Barrel, or local fine cooking store.
Set of basic tools is always a good thing, but most like he has all that since he is a contractor.
Does he like sports? Tickets to a game is always good, even if he does not like sports that much, a lot of people like to go.
Classic guy movies, Rudy, Top Gun, Remember the Titians, (any old clint eastwood movies), hehe some of those are my fav. :)

The best thing you can do, until you meet him and find out what his personality is really like, is talk to your daughter.
What types of activities (besides work) does he do? Does he follow any sports teams?
Worst case scenario, you could get him a gift card to Home Depot or Lowes, that way he can get a new tool or materials to help him in his work.
Just some thoughts. Happy Holidays and good luck.

Try asking your daughter what kind of cooking he likes to do. Then you can find a cookbook on that subject. With the cookbook you can add spices, knives, and a Kiss The Cook apron.

Pocketwatches are the best. Get him a nice recognizable name brand one, try to find one at least 2 inches in diameter.
I bought all my groomsmen, and my father in law and my father a Swiss Army one. Got great service and a fair price from Little Shop of Bargains on eBay, bargainshop@bellsouth.net, write to Jennifer and ask her if she has any more.
