Laziness or ignorance. Not helped by text culture.

I think a lot of people are in a hurry when they post their answers and forget to do spell check.

Then, there are those that simply cannot spell and don't care, which is why 'definitely' gets misspelled.

Receive is easy to misspell because the rule is 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'.

Not spelling the name, Michael correctly is because there are other Michaels who started spelling it Micheal or Michel, Mikel, etc. I have a cousin whose name is Michael and that's how he spells it. See the dilemma? I'm not sure when it changed spelling.

It's the same with all bad spelling - laziness, especially here when there's a spell checker a click away. Unfortunately, the use of texting language will only go to make the problem worse.

I've never had a problem spelling Michael. I always mess up the other two just like I have problems with 'receipt' and 'recipe'. Another problem I have is that I always add extra letters to words making them much longer than they should be. Like adding double letters when they shouldn't be there. I'll add an extra 'c' to 'recommend', stuff like that. I always catch myself though.

Its the teaching you receive as a child which affects your spelling habits as adults... maybe teaching standards have lowered... maybe we need to bring back the cane to make sure everyone remembers how to spell essential words like these?!

(and yes I did have to use spell check just now...!)
