if he likes basketball, maybe get him a jersey of his favorite team but have his name put on the back of it instead

Some of my favorite gifts from less to more expensive (well more or less)
a CD of favorite love songs (did this for my tenth anniversary and wrapped in aluminum foil since it was the tin year, husband keeps it in the truck)
Framed photo (collage or book)
goodie basket. Recipients favorites homeade food - or candies and microwave popcorn, hot chocolate and a movie
Magazine subscription or book
A picnic basket loaded and ready to go for a drive. (CD, food & drinks, blanket)
A wallet (stick some nice pics in to personalize), watch, sunglasses, victorianox swiss army knife
MyPublisher photo book - online service to print professional bound book - very cool - a little expensive
Tickets to a concert, game or special event near the holiday
Digitial photframe or Ipod preloaded with songs/pictures
digital camera - I just got a Canon S3 powershot with great controls and feel ($3oo on sale). less can get you a decent camera for point and shoot. Would love the Rebel or upper level nikkon but too $$$
Museum/Club/gym membership
season passes to the sport you guys like
Good luck, picking out gifts

You've got the answers right in your question. You know what he likes so trust your instincts. CDs are always safe. How about a framed photo of the two of you ... or one of just you? Make him a scrapbook containing all the momentos you've been collecting since you've been together: movie tickets, a flower you pressed from a bouquet he gave you, snapshots, a menu from your favorite or the first restaurant you went to. How about tickets to a basketball game?

In my opinion you shouldn't buy typical , ordinary thing. Try to find something unexpected for him. Things which he does't expect at all. It is many ideas about it. But it is very important to buy something whis will be useful , not thing which after time of giveing gifts goes to the bin because is boring or unusful at all.
I hope that you find something and this will be great gift.
:)
