If there is no sport for the gender, then yes. For example, if there is no girls' football team and there is a boys' football team then either (a) let the girl join the boys' football team or (b) form a girls' football team.
I feel the same vice versa. In the article you linked to, I disagree with the court's ruling. Since there was no boys' gym team, the school should have made provision for him to compete with the girls' team, formed a boys' team, or allowed him to join a neighboring boys' team.

I think that if the sport only has boys or girls, then the opposite sex should be allowed to play. For instance, a girl should be allowed to play football, since there is no girl's sport, and a boy should be allowed to play field hockey, since there usually is no boy's team.

i believe that girls should be allowed to join boys teams if there is not equivelant sport (ie girls joining football teams, but not basketball teams)
not to sound sexist, but as an overall look at boys competing against girls, boys usually (usually) are more successful than girls. therefore i dont think boys should be allowed to join girls teams

no it shouldnt be able to happen either way, thats the reason that they are called GIRLS and BOYS teams, to me it just confuses things
