I posted a question about what laptop brands are best and I got some pretty good answers. One of the answers said that what's in the laptop that matters more.
I am a student. I do alot of research, I download alot of music for my ipod, take lots of pictures, did I mention research (lol), and I do alot of e-mailing, writing papers, etc. I also need something that can keep up with speed and doesn't need to be re-booted every 5 minutes. Thanks:)

That depends on how much you are willing to spend. I'll assume that you aren't interested in a Mac (but I would suggest you check them out unless there are Windows programs that you need to use...)

I reccomend spending at least $1100 on a laptop, it's a good place to start and they're plenty well equipped at that price. Of course, you could spend $500 or less and get... junk. You could spend as much as $4,500 and get something that is heavy, bulky, powerful but probably TOO powerful. And horrible battery life.

Whatever you do, get one with a Widescreen display, at least 1GB of memory, a Core 2 Duo processor and a dedicated graphics card. I don't care what else you are willing to comprimise on, DO NOT comprise on any of those things. I don't care if you are going to play games or not... always, always, always, get a dedicated graphics card (unless you need 8 hours+ of battery life).

I like this laptop, I think it would be perfect for you (provided it is in your price range), http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115291

That's a configuration I would reccomend to someone looking for a general purpose laptop that can handle some light gaming on the side and it seems like that is what you are going to do. I don't know what the other said about laptop brands but personally, I've never had a problem with Acer. I'd stay clear of HP and Gateway.

For about $1200 you can get an amazing laptop from HP or Gateway. Make sure you get a dual core processor (AMD X2 or Core 2 Duo) around 1.7 Ghz. You may be able to get a discount through your school if they have a deal going with a company, check into it. From HP you could get a 17" widescreen with 1.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB DDR2, 256MB dedicated graphics (geforce go 7200), 100 GB SATA HD, integrated webcam. If you went with a 15.4" display you could get the same thing except 2GB DDR2 (you can have all kinds of programs running at the same time without any problems).

The specs listed would work great in any laptop. A 100GB HD should be plenty (I have around 40 GB of music and I still have 20GB free on an 80 GB HD). You would be fine with 128MB dedicated graphics for what you want to do. If you want more advice I can point you in the right direction.
