I have a desktop and a laptop. I know that there is a way to do this but I am not sure how. If I am at school on my laptop and want to access something on my computer at home (desktop) how do I do this?

There are several ways. VPN Software is probably the easiest.

www.logmein.com
www.hamachi.cc
www.openvpn.org

I've used LogMeIn and Hamachi. Both are good. They are commercial products, but they have free options that are all I've ever needed. OpenVPN is open source and requires a bit more configuration.

There are a couple of different ways this can be done. The cheapest way is to get an FTP program. You can setup and FTP server on the desktop and an FTP client on the laptop. This will allow you to connect from the laptop to the desktop and transfer files.

The more expensive way is to get a program like PCAnywhere from Symantec. This program not only allows the transferring of files, but actually allows you to control the dekstop computer from the laptop.
