i have to proofread the text on a 100+ page website, and show my changes to my manager before making them live.

rather than print-out 100+ pages, ideally i'd like a tool attached to IE (or firefox ...) that lets me view the site as I normally would, but also allows me to type suggested changes to the text (or somehow mark-up the page) ... these changes, of course, would not be uploaded to the server, but they would be visible on my screen and when I print the page for approval.

has this been invented?

I'm not really sure but it sounds like if any program will do it, Jedit will, http://www.jedit.org/ I know for a fact it allows you to edit code on a live website, though you might need a plugin for that... I think it was the FTP plugin... I'm not sure though, I usually don't deal with this kind of thing but if I remember correctly, it's what my friend used.
