My daughter put the knob of the cooker down the back of the brand new sofa - l can only get a piece of wire down there but need something like a magnet for alluminium, does anyone know if it exists or any other ways of getting it without wrecking the sofa?

I don't think you can get magnets for aluminium, that's the point of aluminium sadly. However, I'm assuming your daughter is fairly young - would she be willing and able to get her smaller hand down the back of the sofa to retrieve it? Failing that, try getting one of those grabber things that they use for litter picking or giving to old folks to get stuff off the floor.

I'll have a think and see if there's anything else you could shove down there... ;)

You might try getting a v-shaped magnet and tying it to a string and letting it go down the back of the sofa.. the magnet would be attracted to the knob and hopefully you could then take it out.. Frankly.. I find it hard to visualize what you are talking about.. but good luck anyway

Try a long loop of wire, such as awire coathanger stretched out. You could even tape a leg from an old pair of tights over the loop so as to make a large or long scoop. Try sliding this down the back of the sofa and seeing id it will scoop up the knob.

There are retrievers that are like a flexible metal cable with grippers that can be opened and closed with (of course) a top knob.
You poke that flexible cable down until it hits the missing knob and then push the top to open the grippers.. Close them on the found piece and pull it up again. The retrievers are about two feet long and about a quarter inch in diameter so they can fit anywhere for retrievals.

Turn the sofa upside down remove a few of the staples which hold the cloth on the bottom, just enough to insert your arm. Insert your arm and retrieve your knob. Restaple

Aluminium is not magnetic so no help there. I'm assuming this is dropped within the sofa itself? Can you see the knob or are you guessing at its location? The previous answers of untacking the underlining to get at it may be your only hope.

Tie a piece of string to your knob and an open door. Make sure its taunt. Then slam the door shut. It won't help your stuck knob, but it sure will hurt.
