I don't think the odor will hurt you physically, but I can't stand that smell either, certainly wouldn't want to deal with it while pregnant. There's a source for the urine smell and you need to find it. It's probably the carpet or the carpet padding, or a vertical or horizontal surface about 2-3 feet off the floor. If it's the carpet, have it steam-cleaned or just tear it all out and replace it (you don't want your baby crawling around on a pissy floor anyway). If there's a place where it has run underneath or saturated the drywall, you'll have to replace that section of drywall. You might also get some good tips by asking about how to get rid of a cat urine smell over in the Pets section of Y/A.

Yes, I was working in an Animal Hospital when I found out I was pregnant and I wasnt allowed to be around the litter boxes, there is ammonia in the cat urine and that can hurt the baby.

Yes, cat urine is very harmful to pregnant woman and their unborn child. That does not mean get rid of your cat though, only if it is urinating everywhere and the smell is foul. Other than that you should not be worried.

if you are pregnant, my dr (both times i was preg) recommended me not cleaning out the cat box. not because of asthma, but because of a brain related birth defect that can be caused when you come in contact with cat feces.

my vet said that the bacteria that can cause this birth defect only develops after the feces has been sitting in the box for more than 24 hours, and if you clean the box daily, it shouldn't be a problem.

believe which one you want to believe, i think better safe than sorry. never heard about the asthma thing tho

Yes. When my Daughter was pregnant doc told her not to clean the litter box because of certain germs in cat waste can affect the pregnancy.

It's not the urine, its the the 'fecal matter' that contains harmful bacteria. Although I wouln't recommend touching it anyway. Have hubby change the litter box and you will be fine.

Actually, the urine itself is steril, but the sent of it can kill brain cells, as can nailpolish remover, and many other things.
